Using deep ROSAT PSPC imaging data the authors have now shown conclusively that faint (B ≍ 22m) galaxies make a significant contribution to the X-ray background. On five fields they have found a significant spatial correlation between the position of faint galaxies and X-ray background fluctuations. Some 16±2% of the 1 keV background is directly due to faint galaxies with B < 23m and this fraction could rise to ≡50% when the contribution of B > 23m galaxies are included. Both blue and red galaxies participate in the cross-correlation. The nature of the X-ray emission mechanism is still unclear but a suggestion that at least some of the objects may be obscured AGN is contained in the authors' detection of an individual object at z = 2.35 with an X-ray luminosity comparable to a QSO but which only shows narrow Ly α and C IV emission lines in its optical spectrum. A near IR spectrum obtained at UKIRT shows a broad Hα emission line at 2.2 microns, indicating that this is a certain example of a dust obscured QSO contributing to the 1 keV X-ray background.
