Evidence is presented for an acceleration of the geomagnetic field in 1912-1913 that was very similar to the jerk experienced in 1969-1970. Historical data were gathered at 40 stations in the Northern Hemisphere and 10 in the Southern Hemisphere covering the period 1850-1980. Precipitous changes in the secular variation were observed in 1912-1913 and 1969-1970. Traces of lines of equivalent values using raw data demonstrate that the variations that occurred at the more recent date were located very close to the earlier observed jerk and displayed a similar geometry.
