Problems of the sequential collapse by fast relaxation of oblate axially symmetric dissipationless systems of particles are examined as a simulation of the formation of elliptical galaxies and rich clusters of galaxies. Numerical investigations using the macroparticle method with approximately 10,000 particles are performed to determine the influences of an initially dense core region and slow sequential accretion of a series of envelopes on the ultimate structures of strongly inhomogeneous systems. Power law surface density profiles are obtained in all cases, with indices for some models corresponding both to those of typical elliptical galaxies, and to those observed in rich clusters and giant elliptical galaxies. The results thus demonstrate the importance of relaxation effects in the evolution of gravitating systems.
