The detailed study of the nature of the ``active'' source population is being pursued by complementing deep and large area X-ray surveys with observations at almost all the wavelengths. I will review the main results obtained in the past few years on the evolutionary properties of AGN, with particular emphasis on the most osbcured and highest redshift AGN population in the framework of the deepest (e.g.Chandra Deep Fields) and largest (e.g. COSMOS) surveys.
