The international radio astronomical community is involved in the realization of the next generation radio telescope: the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). Several new instruments are built as SKA pathfinders (e.g. LOFAR) and will be available within a few years. Also, new development is foreseen in the VLBI with the launch of the japanese space antenna VSOP2 and with new high frequency arrays as the Global Millimeter VLBI Array. I will shortly review most relevant projects related to the study of AGNs, their scientific aims and the role of the Italian researchers.
