A and B type stars display a large variety of peculiar characteristics, including anomalous chemical composition, stratification of the chemical elements, presence of strong and ordered magnetic fields. For this and other reasons, A and B-type stars may be considered as specially interesting laboratories for stellar astrophysics. I will review the observational results about composition and distribution of the chemical elements over the stellar photosphere, about the morphology and strength of the magnetic fields, and about the evolution of these characteristics during the star's life in the main sequence. I will compare theory predictions against recent observational results.
