The present computer method, which may be employed to either automatically or interactively determine the geomagnetic K-indices, is based on a modified data-adaptive filtering technique and regards the solar regular magnetic variation as a nonlinear drift in the magnetic data over a 24-hour period. The dynamic range of the low K-indices is very small for recordings made at the Magnetic Observatory, Hermanus; the computer is capable of detecting smaller variations than would be possible with hand-scales magnetograms.
