A series of active experiments was performed in the equatorial region to investigate the role of Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the development of large-scale irregularities ('bubbles') in the postsunset equatorial ionosphere and to to examine the possibility of the artificial triggering of an instability. Radio-physical methods were used to study the characteristics of irregularity development in the equatorial F-region after the propagation of wave disturbances resulting from the injection of a plasma-forming mixture at 200 km.
