The investigation of the role of starbursts in the evolution of galaxies is the channel for understanding the link between the low and the high redshift Universe. Bursts of star formation create complex environments which cannot be fully understood without combining spatial with spectral information. We propose to construct a two-dimensional grid of J and K spectra of the central 20''×20'' region of four representative starburst galaxies, covering the wavelength ranges 1.15- 1.35 (micron) and 2.02-2.42 (mu)m. Together with analogous observations obtained in the optical, the maps will be used to re-construct the `history' of star formation of the starbursts, by investigating spatial variations of the stellar content (via H emission, CO absorption, and optical indices), of the dust extinction and geometry (via Paschen, Bracket and Balmer emission), of the extent and physical characteristics of the shocks (via [FeII] and H_2 emission). This study is aimed at ``gauging'' the global impact of the starburst on the host galaxy, on both the stellar population and ISM. The four galaxies have been chosen for their large H(alpha) surface brightness, for the extent of the burst, and for their closeness, which allows us to probe small spatial scales (~200 pc).
