Starting around 14 UT on 11 April, 1997, WIND recorded a sudden reduction in the solar wind density. This was followed by a second reduction, then by a sudden increase shortly later. The first transition reached the Earth's magnetopause around 15 UT. GOES 8 and 9 were located in the morning sector and observed the magnetopause motion of the first reduction as an increase in the Bz component of the magnetic field. We have simulated this period with a global MHD simulation model which was driven by the WIND measurements. In this talk, we compare simulation results with the GOES 8 and 9 observations. The propagation of the response to the first density reduction through the magnetosphere and the signature observed in the ionosphere are discussed in a companion talk by W.J. Hughes et al.
