A basic assumption inherent in all calculations of light curves for X-ray binaries with early-type components is that the primary star is in synchronous rotation (co-rotation) with the orbital period. There is a possibility that massive X-ray binaries with low mass ratio may not have had sufficient time to achieve co-rotation. The effects of departure from co-rotation on the light curve of the optical counterpart HD 77581 of the X-ray binary 3U 0900-40 is investigated, and it is concluded that a breakdown of the co-rotation assumption could result in significant errors in the mass ratio and orbital inclination derived from a conventional Roche-lobe analysis of the light curve.-
