Experiments on the irradiation of the ionosphere by high-power radio waves have shown, that in the case of the irradiation of the F2 region by intense waves of ordinary polarization, there arises an additional glow of the upper atmosphere in the 6300 and 5577 A lines. This paper discusses a possible mechanism of this enhanced glow: namely the simultaneous augmentation of the electron temperature and the distortion of the electron distribution function under the action of the high-power radio waves. It is found that the accelerated-electron flux that is generated enhances only a small part of the radio-wave energy flux, which agrees with the theory of the nearly total dissipation of radio-wave energy during the heating of electrons.
