The Robertson-Walker geometry in an empty five-dimensional universe is derived, and the effective four-dimensional evolution is analyzed. The radius of the compact fifth dimension is regarded as a non-static quantity. The ``fine structure'' constancy is asymptotically respected only provided the cosmological constant vanishes and the ordinary three-space is open. Characteristically, the evolution of the very early universe is governed by the Zeldovich equation of state P=ϱ.
