Consideration is given to a polytropic model of the atmosphere in which the vertical temperature gradient, along with the weighted mean temperature of an air column and the surface pressure, is the required function. This function depends on the horizontal coordinates and on time. As are the studies by Pisnichenko (1980) and Kurganskii and Pisnichenko (1981), the approximation of geostrophic motions of the second type is used. It is found that, if the equations of the polytropic model of the atmosphere are averaged with respect to height, a consistent two-dimensional baroclinic model can be constructed which describes a broader class of atmospheric motions than the model developed by Pisnichenko and Kurganskii.
