In this paper we attempt to develop an analytic description of a phase transition which leads to the formation of topological defects. In detail we consider the effect of ``Nielsen-Olesen'' stringlike solutions on the phase transition. The statistical properties of a box of strings in flat space in thermal equilibrium are derived. Neglecting interactions our results are in agreement with those of Mitchell and Turok. We discover the temperature at which strings are formed and show how the Ginzburg length arises in our description.
