One of the main factors determining the daily variation of the active surface temperature is the state of the vegetation cover. It can well be characterized by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). In this study the relationship between NDVI and the daily variation of the active surface temperature was investigated over a 50x50 km area in Western Hungary on two summer days in 1993. The active surface temperature was determined by aircraft measurements, whereas the NDVI values were calculated from the afternoon NOAA-11 AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) data. Both parameters were averaged over 3x3 AVHRR pixel boxes. The net radiation was assumed to be homogeneous over the investigated area. The aircraft temperature measurements taken within given time intervals were assigned to specified narrow bins of NDVI according to the variation of the vegetation index values of the target boxes. The slope of the morning temperature increase was found to be correlated with the vegetation index. Similar correlation exists between NDVI and the temperature amplitude calculated from coincident morning and afternoon NOAA-11 AVHRR imagery.
