Diffraction phenomena in the vicinity of caustics arising in the case of short-wave transmission in the ionosphere are examined on the basis of the parabolic-equation method. It is shown that random irregularities lead to a spreading of the regular field (a broadening of the angular spectrum) and the appearance of additional foci. It is suggested that field destruction is a common phenomenon in the vicinity of caustics in the case of short-wave propagation in the ionosphere.
