Measurements of the spectral reflectance of quartz are described, and the significance of these measurements for lunr and planetary remote sensing of mineral and rock types using laser reflectance is discussed. Contrary to previous findings, it is shown that the decreasing intensity of fundamental molecular vibration bands with decreasing particle size is primarily due to increasing porosity of the finer particle size ranges, rather than to particle size by itself. The implications for laser reflectance measurements from orbiting spacecraft are examined.
