The stability of a polytropic fluid layer in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated for the case of the combined influence of thermal and magnetic diffusion. Special attention is given to the stability of hydromagnetic modes which are believed to be important in the sunspot phenomenon. It is found that finite electrical conductivity produces a destabilizing effect on the convective modes, and that small-scale convection can occur in the presence of a strong magnetic field if the magnetic diffusivity is larger than the thermal diffusivity. It is noted, however, that the magnetic diffusivity has a tendency to stabilize the fast, slow, and Alfven modes.
