The thermal state of the polar ionosphere was analyzed on the basis of the numerical solution of the transport equations for the ionospheric plasma, including ion motion and continuity equations and heat equations for ions and electrons. It is shown that convection is able to explain sharp changes of the electron density in the main trough if changes of ion temperature, determined by frictional heating under the effect of strong electric fields, are taken into account. The Ti/Te ratio in the shadow region is greater than unity in the region of strong electric fields.
