The falling-sphere method is used to study the effect of carbon dioxide on the viscosity of silicate liquids at high pressure and temperature. It is found that CO2 reduces the viscosity of NaAlSi3O8 liquid at high pressure by a factor of two. This is believed to be the result of the depolymerization of the liquid on solution of CO2. It is suggested that CO2 will have a minor influence, compared to H2O and F, on the modification of the physical properties of silicic magmas.
