A series of triaxial tests were conducted on specimens of synthetic granular materials containing various amounts of cement. It is found that even very small quantities of cement significantly increase the strength of granular materials. The results also suggest that the amount of cement is less important than the location where it is deposited. Strengthening is shown to result from the precise deposition of cement at grain-to-grain contacts, which prevents sliding and rotation of grains.
