VLF emissions produced by a gyro-resonant interaction in the presence of a bi-Maxwellian plasma penetrated by a current have been studied. The results obtained show that field-aligned currents reduce the growth rate due to temperature anisotropy. This phenomenon is analyzed theoretically to assess the effect of Birkeland currents on very low frequency (VLF) emissions occurring in the magnetosphere.
