Solar Lyman alpha flux and exobase hydrogen density distribution were measured aboard OSO-5 by means of a UV spectrophotometer during the period August 1974 to August 1975. The data were obtained at the end of solar cycle number 20 near a solar minimum. The average hydrogen density increases with decreasing temperature, reaching values of about 400,000 atoms/cu cm (at 500 km) at 700 K. The Jeans escape flux varies from 10 to the 8th per sq cm per sec at 1200 K to 2.17 per sq cm per sec at 700 K. Nonthermal perturbations are more important at low solar activity conditions, giving exobase density ratios as high as 3.7 and equal to 2.1 on the average. The hydrogen sub-solar bulge in latitude seems to be independent of solar activity.
