There are two aspects to the early evolution of the lunar crust in the period prior to the extrusion of the mare basalts: (1) the magmatic activity which led to the chemical differentiation of the outer regions of the moon, and (2) the bombardment of the moon by large objects in the period immediately after its formation. The use of Ar-40-Ar-39 age determinations in establishing the chronology of the bombardment is discussed. Attention is also given to the assumption that the younger age of 3.88 plus or minus 0.04 Ga is the upper limit for the Imbrium event.
