A method for using VLF data to study the dynamics of the lower ionosphere during auroral disturbances is described. Three-frequency relative variations of VLF signals (10-16 kHz), recorded in the central zone of the source, were used to determine the reflection coefficients of the first two ionospheric rays from quiet auroral ionosphere and for several auroral disturbances. The data were obtained at the Apatity station during 1975 and involved five cases of VLF variations and one case of cosmic-noise absorption at 40 MHz.
