Westward traveling surges generated by a violent expanding motion of an auroral system during an auroral substorm degenerate sometimes into a loop or a group of loops after they are propagated westwards a certain distance. The loop (or the group of loops) thus formed drifts westwards with various speeds. In this paper, characteristics of the westward drifting loops are studied.
