The problem is examined of identifying navigational reference points (stars, or landmarks on the surface of a planet) that are used in measurements required for determining orbital elements. Three identification schemes which can be used to solve the problem in the case of a priori information of general nature on the spacecraft trajectory are discussed. A general identification algorithm is developed by introducing the concept of a permissible reference-point detection region. Example applications of the algorithm are presented.
