Ion density measurements made at 840 km altitude during 331 passes of the DMSP satellites are used to formulate a model for the occurrence of equatorial spread F. Spread F is taken as irregular traces on ground ionograms, i.e., plasma bubbles. The spacecraft carried planar retarding potential analyzers mounted on booms. Spread F appearance was associated with crossing of a low-altitude topside density and was seasonally-variant. The distribution of spread F was analyzed and it was found that the probability of a local time occurrence increased from 0.2 at 1930 LT to greater than 0.50 at 2100 LT. Spread F depletions are constrained to seasonally-determined thresholds in the topside ionosphere.
