S3-4 satellite data on the high latitude F region at 170-200 km altitudes are used to characterize F region irregularities in terms of auroral ovals and large scale convection pattern morphologies. The data were gathered with Langmuir probes which permitted measurements of the electron densities and temperatures and plasma potentials. The shapes of the irregularities, when combined with measured intensity distributions, indicated that particle precipitation is the chief cause of the larger scale density fluctuations. Second-order effects such as plasma instabilities may be associated with gradient drift instabilities. It is suggested that ion recombinations cause the decay of the irregularities.
