An analysis of the magnetograms of seven intense storms shows that reliable results from ground-based geomagnetic data are difficult to obtain in investigations of the asymmetry of the ring current. Most of the asymmetry in the Dst variation derives from ionospheric currents. The distortion of the Dst variation caused by these currents is so great that ground-based data can give a result that is the opposite of that obtained through direct measurements in space. The breakdown in the linear relationship between Dst and AE during storms is caused by the shift of ionospheric polar electrojets toward low latitudes.
