The expansion of a cloud of high-energy protons in a cold plasma due to excitation by Alfven oscillations is analyzed in a series of quasi-linear equations. Self-similar solutions are obtained for the cases of nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic particles. The nonlinear mechanisms related to the reversal of the direction of particle motion, and the case of particle trapping in the vicinity of the shock wave are discussed.
