The discovery of V particles by Rochester and Butler (1947) is described along with research that was spurred by this discovery. Particular attention is given to work on elementary-particle systematization by Seriff et al. (1950), Gell-Mann (1953), and Nishijima (1954). The introduction of the concept of strangeness and a new classification of mesons and hyperons are described.
