An approximate solution is obtained for the integral equation of the diffusion of monochromatic radiation in a medium of finite optical depth. It is shown that the population distribution of the energy inside the second quantum level of a hydrogen atom is described by a converted Lorentz curve. It is also shown that the Lyman-alpha radiation of the protuberances due to the excitation of atoms by electron shocks is negligible. The prominences are illuminated in the Lyman-alpha line due to the resonance scattering of chromospheric Lyman-alpha radiation.
