On the basis of a numerical analysis of the orbits of a number of real and 'hypothetical' comets, it is demonstrated that the diffusion of comets in the solar system is related to the Tisserand constant. It is pointed out that the diffusion is significant only for comets with Tisserand constants of more than 0.450. A list of Tisserand constants for the orbits of 29 periodic comets is provided.
