A discussion is given of the energy balance in the region of the solar chromosphere that becomes compressed as a supergranule forms. Initially the compression will be accompanied by rapid heating, but subsequently the temperature excess will gradually be radiated away, whereas the density will continue to rise until new supergranules develop and destroy the cooled elements of the network. The influence of this process on the chromospheric structure observable in the H-alpha and Ca II K lines is examined.
