Alpha factors of 18 proton-flare active regions during 1967-1972 are calculated. It is shown that for proton flares with an importance not less than 1, alpha is not less than 0.34; for proton flares with an importance of not less than 2, alpha is not less than 0.5; alpha factors are observed to increase one-to-two days before the appearance of proton flares. It is therefore suggested that alpha factors can be used to tentatively forecast the occurrence of proton flares. In addition, the hypothesis that major solar flares are produced by a 'squeezing' force-free magnetic field is presented. Optical, radio, and X-ray flare phenomena can occur and an S-shape major solar flare can be generated when charged particles are accelerated by the annihilation of close magnetic loops or when current interruption takes place in magnetic loops.
