The rubidium and caesium contents of 12 chondrites have been determined independently by neutron activation analysis and by an isotopic dilution method using mass spectrometry. The close agreement between the results demonstrates that both methods are essentially free from systematic error. The results for these and for a further 12 chondrites, examined by neutron activation only, confirm the wide range reported previously for the distribution of caesium content and contrast sharply with the uniformity of caesium content claimed by et al. (1960). In particular, for the same sample of Bluff examined at both laboratories results are: neutron activation 0.0086 ppm, mass spectrometry 0.0088 ppm, et al. (1960) 0.14 ppm. New results are listed for a total of 32 samples including 3 carbonaceous chondrites, 2 pallasites, a mesosiderite and an achondrite. Combining data from this and earlier investigations gives for 24 chondrite falls mean values and ranges of rubidium 2.45 ppm (1.3-3.8 ppm) and caesium 0.073 ppm (0.005-0.2 ppm); this mean caesium value is distinctly lower than the interpolated cosmic abundance of 0.4 ppm ( and , 1956; , 1959) and somewhat lower than a later calculated value of 0.116 ppm ( and , 1961). A brief investigation has been made of possible fractionation mechanisms based on volatility and the leaching action of water.
