The experimental detection of muon pairs generated in strong interactions of cosmic ray hadrons with energies greater than those presently attainable in particle accelerators is reported. Muon groups near the axes of extensive air showers were recorded by a set of 16 wide-gap spark chambers located at a depth of 20 m under an ionization calorimeter, and the distances of muon convergence points from air shower axes were determined. Analysis of the approximately 30 muon groups detected with convergence points above and below the ionization calorimeter indicates that muon pairs are generated from hadrons with energies greater than 3 TeV at distances less than 3 m from the shower axis. It is thus concluded that there is a sharp increase in the cross section of direct muon pair generation at hadron energies between 2 and 10 TeV.
