We describe the application of the CUSUM technique to detect bursts in UHE and VHE gamma ray data. Probability distributions have been determined both by means of Monte Carlo methods and through an analytical computation based on a Markov chain approach to the problem of sporadic emission. The CUSUM method retains time information and is the preferred method to test for sporadic emission in ground-based gamma ray astronomy. We have applied the CUSUM algorithm to the data set recorded by the South Pole Air Shower Experiment, SPASE. No conclusive evidence for sporadic emission was obtained for the period 1988-1991.
