We discuss a generalization of the cosmon model by turning its global dilatation invariance into a local conformal invariance. In a Weyl realization of this symmetry, the ``would-be'' cosmon field is eaten up by a conformal gauge boson which acquires a large mass. The new model is used to relax the cosmological constant to zero by means of a probabilistic mechanism first suggested by Hawking in the framework of euclidean quantum gravity.
