It is shown that the plasmasphere corotates because of the high conductivity of the ionosphere. Because the conductivity of the ionosphere is greater during the day, there is a different response of the plasmapause (to a magnetic storm) on the night and day sides. It is also shown that if there was a vacuum outside earth, an individual charged particle could only corotate with earth if it were at the surface and the equator. In every other case it would lag behind. Thus, what is sometimes called 'the earth's corotation electric field', is in fact due to a space charge in the plasma rather than just earth. If a plasma is separated from a rotating magnet by a vacuum, the problem is indeterminate.
