A strong continuum spectrum is evident on slitless spectrographs of the lightning discharge. The radiation processes which may contribute to the continuum spectrum are considered. These processes are black body radiation, Bremsstrahlung, recombination radiation, attachment radiation and cyclotron radiation. It is shown that a determination of the temperature of a lightning stroke as a function of time is possible from an analysis of the time resolved continuum spectrum of the stroke. For lightning spectra recorded by , the maximum stroke temperature is found to be greater than 10,000°K if the lightning discharge is optically thick and greater than 30,000°K if the lightning discharge is optically thin. The assumption is made that the particles of the lightning discharge attain thermal equilibrium in a time short compared to the time in which the characteristics of the lightning stroke change appreciably.
