Both the correlation and coherency between the count rates of precipitated and trapped energetic (greater than 40 keV) electrons, as observed by a particle experiment aboard the ESRO 1A satellite at northern high latitudes at 07 plus or minus 2 hr local time during March 1969, have been computed. The coherency estimates give a measure of the correlation between the fluctuations of the two count rates as a function of frequency. Highly coherent fluctuations, with periods of between 1 and 4 sec, were observed during the study of 'splash' precipitation events. Nearly simultaneous recordings of VLF chorus at South Uist, Scotland (L = 3.4) show similar and other periodicities. These results are discussed in terms of O'Brien's 'splash-catcher' model and the Kennel-Petschek theory of whistler-mode turbulence associated with a gyroresonance plasma instability.
