We propose a pilot study for a high resolution 6 GHz continuum survey of the Galactic Plane. We will test the on-the-fly scanning technique which provides better uv coverage and compare with the traditional mosaic method. The full survey will cover the same area as deep, high resolution surveys by the SPITZER and HERSCHEL satellites. The main science driver is massive star formation with the survey yielding an unbiased census of ultra-compact H II regions in the inner Galaxy. This will allow the evolutionary sequence from cold, radio quiet cores through to UCHII regions to be elucidated. The lifetime of the various stages as a function of mass will be determined and the massive star formation rate mapped out around the Galaxy. H II regions are the main tracer of gaseous spiral arms and this survey will enable them to be traced to the far side of the Galaxy, testing new galactic models. The survey will allow the selection of well-defined sub-samples for study with the high resolution capabilities unique to the southern hemisphere. Stellar evolution studies will also benefit greatly from this survey which will have lasting legacy value.
