The CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) aims at measuring with high precision the photons and electrons produced in the collisions at LHC. It contains ≈ 76000 Lead-tungstate crystals. The main challenges are to measure the electromagnetic shower energy with a precision better than 1% above 100 GeV and to operate reliably in the harsh radiation environment of LHC. We present a short overview of the calorimeter design, recent progress in its construction and results of system tests performed recently with fully assembled Barrel supermodules.
