We present initial results of the analysis of cometary X-ray spectra with a new atomic physics based charge exchange emission (CXE) model. We have applied this model to a sample of 8 comets observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and ACIS spectrometer in the 300 to 1000 eV range. The sample of comets are: C/1999 S4, C/1999 T1 (McNaught-Hartley), C/2000 WM1, C/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang), 2P/2003 (Encke), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), 9P2005 (Tempel 1), and 73P/2006 (SW3-B) and contains a broad variety of comets, solar wind environments and observational conditions. Our CXE model includes lines from C,N,O and Ne, and has 1 free parameter for each ionic species with all lines of a species fixed to the strongest line based on their velocity dependent cross sections. The spectra are dominated by emission from hydrogen- and helium-like carbon and oxygen, but several comets show significant NVI, NVII, Ne VIII and Ne IX emission. Spectral variations are driven by solar wind velocity and abundances, and thus the spectra are well suited to derive these solar wind abundances. Our CXE model provides new information on the plasma physics within cometary atmospheres and we discuss the current model and future improvements.
