A key element for the feasibility of the ROSETTA mission is the successful demonstration of the cometary sample acquisition under the largely unknown environment of the envisaged possible comet targets. This requires the establishment of cometary models and preparation of analog soil material samples and the in-depth assessment of technologies for coring and shovelling. The present status of the coring and anchoring devices definition is presented, and the heritage with Earth-based coring techniques is highlighted. The strategy of the sample acquisition technology development programme is presented, based on a dual approach using combined stepwise analytical and experimental verification. Specific coring tests performed provide first indications of the feasibility of the proposed coring device.
