Aftershocks of the Ms 7.1 central New Britain earthquake show a shallow fault 0 to 20 km in depth, dipping steeply (75°-85°) toward the south and extending for about 50 km in an east-west direction. This is consistent with the focal mechanism which can be interpreted as left-lateral motion on a nodal plane oriented N100°E and dipping 80° to the south-southwest. The orientation of the principal stress axes indicates that this frontal arc region is under tensional stresses.
