The theoretical implications of the discovery of the carbon star G77 - 61 in the main sequence of the HR diagram are considered. The nature of carbon stars is reviewed, and methods for determining the characteristics of stars, and in particular those of G77 - 61, are discussed. The evolutionary status of the carbon star G77 - 61 is examined.
